At the origin of a book there is always a desire to pass something on, and that holds true for this Lascaux, the work of six hands.
But why did a prehistorian specializing in the Paleolithic and the curator of the Lascaux cave (Jean-Michel Geneste) and two historians of language and authors of dictionaries (Tristan Hordé and Chantal Tanet) decide to pool their thoughts? A chance encounter in the Vézère Valley in 2000, where we all have close ties, led us to discover similar interests in the process of cultural transmission and in the problems of memory and time in art and language.
Our exchanges led to many conversations, which in turn gave us the desire to put them into written form. This is how Lascaux : A Work of Memory was born.
